Our mission is to support and nurture the arts among the youth of the Saranac Lake Central School District. Our purpose is to support performance and creative arts through program support as well as with scholarships for workshops, summer camps and college study in the arts.
WHAT IS SLYAA?
SLYAA began with a group of determined community volunteers who worked to bring an orchestra to accompany the Saranac Lake High School music department’s major work in 1994.
With the success of that project Saranac Lake Young Arts Organization was founded in 1995, and incorporated in 1997. In 1998 SLYAA became a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit group. In 2002 the first website presence was launched.
2015 marked the 20th anniversary of SLYAA. Over the two decades forty five Trustees have worked for the youth of our community through service on the Board.
The generosity of the people in the Saranac Lake Central School district has been unwavering and makes possible all that SLYAA does. Donations are gratefully accepted and may be made with no restriction or be directed towards a specific art or program. All gifts are tax-deductible.
SLYAA supports all children, kindergarten through college age, who reside in the Saranac Lake Central School District including those who attend public, private, parochial and home schools.
TIMOTHY BEGOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Timothy Begor was not someone you would have noticed when he entered Saranac Lake High School as a freshman. But when he was diagnosed with cancer, everything changed. Tim turned to art and discovered an avenue for self-expression that was unlike anything he had known before. He became fully engaged, spending every spare moment in the art room. He worked hard and long and, because art has this special power, he bloomed. Tim’s hand was the first up when volunteers were needed. Tim’s circle of friends grew. His growing popularity reflected his own confidence and awareness.
Timothy Begor graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1994 and died of cancer in 1996. A scholarship in his memory is awarded annually to a student pursuing full time college study in creative or performance art.
FRED C BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
We also provide assistance for students attending summer camps or other institutes and programs providing education in creative or performance arts.
